Charter school a good thing for Elgin

As a member of the Elgin Charter School Initiative, I want to provide a few facts about charter schools.

Charter schools are public schools. They are open to any student in the district. They have no tuition requirements. Private school tuition in Elgin ranges from $4,225 to $15,350 per year for grade school students. They have no test score requirements for admission.

When established with community support, charter schools offer options to children and families, resulting in true achievement gains. In fact, on the 2011 ISAT, Chicago charter school students scored higher than those in noncharter public schools, a group which includes selective magnet schools.

We are now reaching out to U-46 and the community. Over the next year, we will continue our outreach efforts as we explore a math and science elementary school concept and earn the support of the community and U-46.
