Nugent, Vernon Hills rock past Maine East

Senior Shannon Nugent slammed 7 kills, and senior Bri Bahlmann and sophomore Kasey Firnbach added six apiece, as Vernon Hills rallied for a 23-25, 25-14, 25-17 season-opening win against Maine East on Wednesday.

Vernon Hills got 2 aces each from Nugent, Firnbach, senior Jenn Claussen and senior Erin Munoz. Senior Jasmine Tamalunas dished out 18 assists, and sophomore Tori Smith lofted nine.

“We needed to brush some cobwebs off and gain some experience since we don’t have much varsity experience playing,” Cougars coach Abbie Gutzmer said. “It was a good learning match for us, and we hope we grow from here.”

Barrington d. Mundelein: The Mustangs (1-2) dropped their second match in as many nights, as the Fillies captured a 25-14, 29-27 win.

Mundelein received 4 kills and 2 aces from Ashley Dolin and 3 kills and 3 aces from Madi Wilcox. Sarah Bregenzer had 4 blocks for the Mustangs.
