Cary high school seniors receive scholarships

Submitted by Cary Lions Club

The Cary Lions Club recently awarded three $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors residing in Cary and attending Cary Grove, Prairie Ridge or Marian Central high schools.

This year’s winners were Prairie Ridge graduate Katarzyna Robak, who will attend Dartmouth and plans to major in international relations, and Cary-Grove graduates Kaitlin Kownick, obtaining a degree in elementary education at the University of Dayton, and Zachary Taylor, attending the University of Illinois business school.

Area high school seniors competed in areas of scholastics, community volunteering and organizational leadership. Each applicant also wrote a short essay on community volunteering.

The review committee was made up of several members of the Cary Lions Club, who reviewed the applications in the blind for confidentiality and ranked each applicant in each category. Scholarship Chairman Lion Mitch Cohen compiled the reviewers’ category rankings to determine the highest combined scores to determine the winners.

The announcements were made at the Cary-Grove High School Awards Night. Scholarship winners and their families were guests at recent Lions Club meetings to read their essays to club members and receive their scholarship checks.
