Kids can participate in ‘summer investigations’ in McHenry

Local youth can partake of “Summer Investigations” with McHenry County Conservation District.

Visit the district’s website at www.MCCDistrict.org to view the programs in greater detail or sign up to receive the quarterly newsletter Landscapes. Registration is accepted online, by phone, mail or walk-in at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake, (815) 479-5779.

Weather Detective: If you are interested in this wacky summer weather, learn all about clouds and the ways they can help predict the weather from 10 to 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at Marengo Ridge Conservation Area, 3100 N. Route 23, Marengo. You’ll also get to make a “weather window” to help classify cloud types to bring home with you. Program for youth ages 6 to 12 is free for county residents; $5 for nonresidents. Registration deadline is Thursday, July 5.

Swirl Search: Embark on a search for this unusual pattern in nature after a short story and craft from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at Hickory Grove Conservation Area, 500 Hickory Nut Grove Lane, Cary. Join this journey that takes time to explore shapes in the natural world. Program for youth age 4 to 6, accompanied by an adult, is free for county residents; $3 for nonresidents. Registration deadline is Monday, July 9.

Super Snakes: Search the fields and forests of Coral Woods for snakes from 10:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, July 18, at Coral Woods Conservation Area, 7400 Somerset, Marengo. Learn about the lives and behaviors of our local snakes, and why they are important to us. Dress for the weather, hiking and exploring. Bring a water bottle. Program for youth age 10 to 12 is free for county residents; $5 for nonresidents. Registration deadline is Friday, July 13.

Morning Meanders: Enjoy three hours filled with games, activities, and crafts all based around the theme of the day, “Beautiful Butterflies,” from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, July 24, at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road, Crystal Lake. A snack is provided. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear good walking shoes, as we will be spending much of the time outdoors. Program fee for youth age 5 to 7 is free for county residents; $7.50 for nonresidents. Registration deadline is Thursday, July 19.

Morning Meanders: Enjoy three hours filled with games, activities, and crafts all based around the theme of the day “Fabulous Flowers,” from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, July 26 at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road, Crystal Lake. A snack is provided. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear good walking shoes, as we will be spending much of the time outdoors. Program for youth age 5 to 7 is free for county residents: $7.50 for nonresidents. Registration deadline is Saturday, July 21.

Afternoon Adventures: Enjoy three hours filled with games, activities, and crafts all based around the theme of the day, “All About Owls,” from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, July 27, at Lost Valley Visitor Center in Glacial Park, Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood. Participants will pretend to be top predators testing their senses and their skills as they try to silently “hunt” for prey. They will also get a chance to dissect real owl pellets to discover what critters were eaten by the owl. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear good walking shoes, as we will be spending much of the time outdoors. A snack is provided. Program fee for youth age 5 to 7 is $6; $7.50 for nonresidents. Registration deadline is Sunday, July 22.
