Minuteman Press helping needy seniors for 14 years

Over the past 14 years, countless needy senior citizens have been fed and otherwise supported through a longtime partnership between Greg Weimar, owner of The Minuteman Press, in Warrenville, and the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) of Carol Stream.

Most recently, the company gave their biannual gift of $400 to renew their pledge to sponsor a needy local senior in HSP's Senior Citizen Project. The sponsored senior will receive monthly deliveries of 90 lbs of groceries, including a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, non-perishables, paper products and other necessities in order to provide the impoverished senior relief against hunger and poverty.

The Minuteman Press has been supporting HSP's programs geared toward ending hunger, and providing birthday gifts for needy children since 1996. This long term support stems from importance the company places on giving back to the community.

Karole Kettering, founder and executive director of HSP, said the “the enduring support of the Minuteman Press, in Warrenville, has empowered HSP to do so much to combat hunger and alleviate the suffering of poverty. So many needy people in our community have had their needs fulfilled thanks to their generosity.”

The needy senior sponsored by the Minuteman Press is one of 120 seniors served by HSP's Senior Citizen Project. Through the project, needy seniors receive a monthly delivery that includes over 15 selections of fresh fruits and vegetables, 7 frozen meats, 5 grocery bags of non-perishables, 2 bags of paper products, containing items such as toilet paper, tissue, and personal care items. A sponsorship of $70/month for a senior also includes monthly gifts from a secret-pal (a community donor), gifts at Christmas time and a monthly meal delivered by volunteers. The seniors in HSP's program also receive other benefits such as free eye glasses referrals, and access to reduced cost dentistry and hearing aids.

About The Humanitarian Service Project

HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,600 children received gifts and 100 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides monthly food deliveries of 90 pounds including fresh produce, frozen meats, non-perishables, paper products and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 900 children. Feed the Kids program provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
