Who speaks for students in U-46?
I was very disturbed after reading the article “U-46 has new teachers contract” on June 5. Toward the end of the article, the chief of staff for the district (Tony Sanders) is describing proudly some of the negotiation outcomes of the new contract — a joint task force made up of administration and union reps that will find ways to transform the school day.
So, who is representing the students in this district in this task force? Union reps are only representing teachers/staff and their rights as state employees. Administration usually has its own agenda that is sometimes separate from the wishes of the community.
Why are officers of the PTO and high school student council members excluded from this task force? If this task force will “transform” the school day, who is sticking up for the students?
