Northwestern Mutual internship paves way for full-time career

Northwestern Mutual's The McTigue Financial Group financial representatives Dami Olotu and Mark Bernthal have already gone to camp - Winter Camp - at Northwestern Mutual's corporate headquarters in Milwaukee. Both qualified in the top 4% of Northwestern Mutual College Representatives for a selective training program that provided two days of inspiration, motivation, and recognition. "Winter Camp is an unbelievable opportunity for a college representative to hear former college interns speak about their Northwestern Mutual experience, development, career decision-making process and their careers today," notes Director of Internship Development, Theresa Taylor at The McTigue Financial Group.

Both Mark, a resident of River Forest and Dami, a resident of Chicago graduated from college in 2011. Upon graduation both found the internship with Northwestern Mutual as a way to test drive the career as a financial representative. Provided with ongoing training, mentoring and coaching, the pair converted to full-time Financial Representatives in February 2012. "Within Northwestern Mutual, I found mentoring relationships that not only developed me professionally, but personally and spiritually as well. I know I wouldn't be where I am in these three areas without the constant support of my mentors," notes Olotu.

"Winter Camp was an opportunity to step out of my business to work on it instead," adds Bernthal. I got to learn, from the expertise and experience of successful representatives all over the country, how they built their practices so that they provide the best value to their clients, which in turn, gave me energy and motivation to implement in my practice."

This year, The McTigue Financial Group is recruiting 50 students for the year-round internship opportunity. Students starting in June can work towards the next training development and recognition opportunity: Northwestern Mutual's Annual Meeting and College Awards Show in July. At this meeting they will be able to meet other representatives and college representatives from across the country as well as hear from some of the best motivational speakers and some of Northwestern Mutual's most successful financial representatives.

The rolling start to the internship means that recruiting efforts are year-round. Students participating in the internship work from one of four locations, including: 2015 Spring Rd in Oak Brook, 650 Dundee Rd in Northbrook 8600 W. Bryn Mawr near O'Hare or One N. Wacker in Downtown Chicago. The internship is a year-round opportunity with students working full time during the summer and part-time during the school year.

For the 15th straight year, Northwestern Mutual's internship program is being recognized as one of the top 10 internships in the country according to Vault Guide to Internship, 2011. One in three interns converts to a full-time position with Northwestern Mutual after graduation. Forty-five percent of the company's field leaders – managing partners and managing directors – are former interns.
