Elk Grove win streak hits 17

Elk Grove’s boys volleyball team stretched its winning streak to 17 games in a 5-0 championship effort at the Addison Trail Invitational on Saturday.

The Grenadiers (19-3) beat Wheaton Academy, Glenbard North, Proviso West, St. Charles North and the host Blazers.

None of Elk Grove wins took more than two sets.

Ÿ Barrington won three of its five matches at the Downers Grove South invitational. The Broncos (17-5) beat Maine West, Lake Park and the host Mustangs in two sets but dropped a three-setter to Lyons and a 26-24, 25-21 decision to Downers Grove North.

College baseball

Oakton Community College won a pair of games against host Morton on Saturday to clinch its first Skyway Conference championship since 2006.

Oakton began the day tied for the league lead with McHenry.

Oakton beat Morton 7-2 in Game 1 and 12-1 behind a strong start from South Elgin grad Kenny Lowden in Game 2.

Rolling Meadows product Dan Lauria had a big day with the bat for Oakton (32-13), finishing 7-for-8 with 4 RBI. Maine West’s Ryan Tuntland went for 1-for-3 in both games and drove in 3 runs in Game 1. Glenbrook North’s Brett Synek went 2-for-3 with a homer and double in the first game.

McHenry dropped the second game of its doubleheader against Prairie State 5-4 on Saturday to make Oakton the outright conference champ.

Ÿ Harper split a pair of North Central Community College Conference games with Joliet Junior College.

In the first game, Scott Plaza (Prospect) tossed a complete game in a 5-4 Harper victory. Nick Spagnola homered and had 2 hits as the Hawks rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, then won it with another run in the seventh.

Harper’s Josh Daniels (Elk Grove) tossed a 7-inning complete-game 1-hitter in the second game, but the Hawks fell 1-0.
