Barrington wins bass fishing sectional
Anglers from Barrington, Hersey and Streamwood survived a rough day on the water and finished with the three heaviest totals Friday on the Fox Chain O’Lakes to advance in the IHSA bass fishing sectionals Friday.
Barrington’s boat driven by Todd Marquith and featuring juniors Wrigley Marquith and Brett Vogt won by catching its limit of five fish for a weight of 11.9 pounds.
Hersey’s boat driven by Dan Caporusso and featuring juniors Nick Starkman and Grant Manno placed second with four fish and 8.9 pounds.
Streamwood’s boat driven by Mike Rubino got efforts from seniors Nick Welu, Peter Samoska, Sammi Almasri and junior Zach Eldridge for a weight of 6.2 pounds.
All the state qualifiers are scheduled to compete in the championship tournament May 4-5 at downstate Carylyle Lake.
Caporusso said the key for his boat was pinpoint casting of spinnerbaits — white, with a bluish tint worked best — into shallow water, as fishing were holding tight to shoreline structure.
A second boat from Hersey driven by David Papez and with anglers Angel Dimitriov and Alec Tchorz aboard finished out of the running with 1.5 pounds, but the Huskies approached the sectional as a team, pre-fishing the Chain together.
“Getting a boat downstate really represents all our kids,” Caporusso said. “All these guys really put a lot of practice time and effort into this, and it showed today.”
Ÿ Elk Grove’s John Hornsberger had the largest fish of the day at the Busse Woods sectional, a lunker that weighed in at 5 pounds, 2 ounces. That turned out to be the only fish taken by the Grenadiers, however, and they placed fourth behind Lake Park and two boats from Hinsdale Central.
