Fremd comes out swinging at Cary-Grove

Cary-Grove never had a chance.

Fremd, which scored 19 runs on 24 hits, swept the Trojans in a nonconference softball doubleheader by the scores of 8-2 and 11-1 in Cary on Saturday.

“I was really pleased with the offense today,” said Fremd coach Jim Weaver. “We had a good plan and a good approach at the plate and we were very disciplined. We know Cary-Grove has a good lineup top to bottom and we had to score some runs today.”

The visiting Vikings didn’t waste any time doing just that against Cary-Grove junior standout Lindsay Efflandt.

With 3 runs on 3 hits in the first inning, Fremd got a 2-RBI double from Caitlin Patenaude and am RBI double from Megan Hubbard.

The Vikes (14-3) kept the pressure on the Trojans and plated 4 more in the third courtesy of a 2-RBI double from Janelle Schneider and a 2-RBI single from Ashlynne Schwantz.

Fremd’s final run of the game came on a solo homer by Leigh Farina in the fifth.

Rachel Doering sparkled in the pitchers circle for Fremd. Pitching 6 innings, Doering struck out four with 3 walks while allowing 2 runs on 3 hits.

The Trojans’ lone 2 runs came in the third on a 2-RBI double by Lisa Semro.

In Game 2, Fremd kept up the offensive barrage with 5 runs in the third off Trojan starter Lauren Stanley. Brittany Ciura, who hit a 2-run homer in the fourth, had a 2-RBI single in the inning while Farina, Michelle Mazur and Hubbard also stroked RBI singles.

With Ciura’s 2-run homer in the fourth, Fremd scored 2 in the sixth on RBI singles by Mazur and Hubbard and 2 in the seventh on a 2-RBI single by Amanda Matsumoto, who was 3-of-5 in the game. Ciura also had 3 hits with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Schwantz was outstanding for the Vikes in the pitchers circle. In 7 innings, she allowed 1 run on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts and no walks.

The Trojans (11-3) scored their lone run in the seventh on an RBI single by Semro, who drove in all 3 of Cary-Grove’s runs for the day.

“It was a very tough day,” said Cary-Grove coach Tammy Olson. “They are a very good team and they really swung the bats today. These are games we can hopefully learn from.”
