Fallen Elgin Marine always wanted to serve others

A 21-year-old Elgin Marine who died Thursday during combat in Afghanistan dreamed of becoming a police officer or firefighter some day, his older sister said Saturday. Cpl. Alex Martinez, 21, a 2009 graduate of Larkin High School, was killed while conducting combat operations in the Helmand Province in Afghanistan, Defense Department officials said in a news release. A pharmacist who grew up in Schaumburg launches a free website, zarpz.com, that allows dying people to record messages that can be sent years after their deaths. “We're not looking to commercialize this,” says Diptesh Patel, a 1992 graduate of Schaumburg High School who now lives in California. Special prosecutor ordered in 2004 death of Mount Prospect man

After nearly eight years, a Mount Prospect mother might finally get some answers about whether the investigation into the death of her 21-year-old son was politically motivated. Cook County Judge Michael Toomin sharply criticized police and prosecutorial conduct in the case, in which a nephew of former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Sears Centre unfazed by loss of hockey team

Though the Chicago Express hockey team Friday announced it was folding after only one season at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, village and arena officials said the impact will be minimal compared to the loss of several other minor league teams in the early years of the facility. “We had our best year ever in 2011, and hockey was only a small part of that,” the general manager said. Lake County teen dies in tollway crash

Illinois State Police are investigating a Saturday morning crash on an Interstate 355 ramp near Downers Grove that killed a 17-year-old Lake County girl. Police say Amber Adams of Park City was riding in the passenger seat of a car that went out of control, hit a parked truck and then collided with a van. Adams, who police say was wearing her seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Full story.

Aurora woman missing since Friday

Aurora police are on the lookout for a missing 79-year-old woman last seen on Chicago's South Side. Lois L. Boyd, of the 0-99 block of south Stolp Avenue, was reported missing on Friday by her son, Aurora authorities said. Boyd's son told police that he dropped his mother off at the Aurora train station Thursday morning so that she could visit her daughter in Chicago. Full story.

Cary man killed in DUI-related crash

A 20-year-old man died after the car he was riding in struck a tree in what police said was a DUI-related crash about 1 a.m. Saturday in Cary. Pedro Atala-Silva, 20, of Cary, died of multiple trauma injuries, McHenry County Deputy Coroner Kim Bostic said Saturday afternoon. The driver, a 19-year-old Cary man, was charged with driving under the influence, police said. Full story.

Girl may appeal ruling in Arlington Hts. rape case

A girl who was raped will probably appeal a federal court's decision that she cannot sue Arlington Heights or the police officer her lawsuit alleged saw her obviously drunk and left her with a man and two male teens in 2009, said her attorney. Full story.

Stolen car dumped in Fox River

Elgin police said Saturday they believe someone drove a stolen car off a boat ramp and into the Fox River near the Route 20 bridge. Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said a 2011 Honda with Nevada license plates was reported stolen from Chicago sometime Friday and was discovered in the river earlier Saturday. Divers determined that there was no one inside the passenger compartment of the car, Theriault said. Full story.
