Man dies in DUI-related crash in Cary

A 20-year-old man died after the car he was riding in struck a tree in what police said was a DUI-related crash about 1 a.m. Saturday in Cary.

Pedro Ayala Jr., 20, of Cary, died of multiple trauma injuries, McHenry County Deputy Coroner Kim Bostic said Saturday afternoon.

Police responded to a call regarding a one-vehicle crash on Elden Drive near Margaret Terrace, Cary police Chief Steve Casstevens said in a news release. The 1997 Ford struck a tree, police said.

The 19-year-old male driver, a resident of Cary, and Ayala both had severe injuries and had to be extricated by fire department personnel, the release said. Police did not immediately release the name of the driver, who was transported via helicopter to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

“He is severely injured,” Casstevens said of the driver. “Until I know his family has been notified, I am not releasing his name.”

Ayala was pronounced dead at the scene by the McHenry County coroner's office.

The driver has been charged with DUI and additional charges are pending, police said. The crash is still under investigation by the Cary Police Department.
