St. Edward got a 2-hitter from Jake Lafrenz in Game 1 then scored twice in the 10th inning of Game 2 Saturday to sweep a nonconference baseball doubleheader from Indian Creek 12-4 and 6-4.
In Game 1, Lefrenz overcame 6 walks with 13 strikeouts in running his record to 3-1. The Green Wave pounded out 15 hits with Luke Duffy (2-for-3, 2 doubles, 3 RBI), Tige Koehring (2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI), Jacob Koehring (2 for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI), Jack Tierney (2-for-3, 3 RBI), Ryan Nudd (2-for-3), Antonio Domel (2-for-4, RBI) and Michael Castro (2-for-5) all contributing.
In Game 2, Domel drew a bases-loaded walk to break a 4-4 tie in the 10th and Castro’s infield single plated an insurance run. Tighe Koehring was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI for the Wave (9-8) and Jacob Koehring was 3-for-5 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Jacob Koehring also picked up the win in relief, throwing two hitless innings.
“We came out swinging the bats really well today,” said St. Edward coach Tim Dovichi. “We wanted to win two today to get over .500 with a tough week coming.”
Huntley 11, Belvidere North 6: Matt Sullivan had a home run and Colin Lyman (2-for-3) and a triple and 2 stolen bases as Huntley (7-4) won in nonconference play. Bryce Only (2-for-4, 2B, RBI), Mark Skoncezny (3-for-4, RBI), Jordan Chuipek (3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) and Kameron Sallee (3-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI) each contributed for Huntley. Craig Klein (3-1) picked up the win in relief.
Burlington Central 3, CL South 2: Riley Jensen scattered 7 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts as the Rockets (8-5) prevailed in a nonconference game.
Schaumburg 9, Elgin 8: The Saxons topped Elgin with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Andrew Higdon (2B, 2 RBI), Gage Teschner (2B), Jake Bartelt (2-for-3, RBI) and Alex Buttell (2-for-3, RBI) led the offense for the Maroons (4-5). Eric Daly (0-2) suffered the loss, pitching the final 4 innings.
Grayslake North 8, Larkin 5: Chris Guzman had 2 hits and Niki Morado and Austin Royse each added RBI doubles for Larkin (4-6) in this nonconference loss. Kyle LaRocca was the losing pitcher for the Royals.
Ottawa Marquette 11, Westminster Christian 7: Dylan Scully was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Ray Adane had 2 hits and an RBI for Westminster (6-4) in this nonconference loss. Tim Rodgers added 2 RBI and Luke Weston drove in a run for the Warriors. Ryan Perez struck out 7, walked 3 and allowed 6 hits in 5 innings to take the loss.
Hampshire 12, Oregon 0: Luke Wians and Jeremy Gogoel combined on a 1-hitter as Hampshire rolled in nonconference play. Michael Laramie was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and Sean O’Shea was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Whip-Purs.
College baseball
ECC sweeps: The Spartans got back on track with an ISCC sweep of Moraine Valley, 14-5 and 10-4. Matt Kieser had a double and a triple in Game 1, while Justin Kalusa added 2 triples and Matt Stevens a double. Dominic Tatone was the winning pitcher. In Game 2, Bob Kaiser had 2 doubles, Stevens added another and Bobby Thorson had a home run for ECC (9-9, 4-2). Thorson was also the winning pitcher.
