Birding by Balcony-Waterfowl: This new program will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Lost Valley Visitor Center in Glacial Park, off Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood. Do you have an interest in bird-watching but are unable to join the long bird hikes? The perfect solution is birding by balcony. At the Lost Valley Visitor Center, you can look out the second-floor windows or off the balcony at vast acres of wetlands or peek directly into the branches of the nearby oak trees. Binoculars and field guides are available for those who do not have their own. Dress for the weather if you plan on going outside on the balcony. The program is free for county residents, age 14 and older, and $2 for nonresidents. Registration deadline is Thursday, April 5.
Watch Out for Waterfowl: New and experienced birders can enjoy a spring walk in Glacial Park from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at Glacial Park Conservation Area, off Route 31 and Harts Road, Ringwood. They will search for migrating waterfowl and other birds in and around Lost Valley Marsh, then return to the Powers-Walker House to compare notes and share refreshments. Dress for the weather and the possibility of wet feet. The program is free for county residents, age 14 and older, and $2 for nonresidents. Registration deadline is Monday, April 9.
Dance of the Woodcock: Learn about the elusive bird from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, at The Hollows Conservation Area, 3804 Route 14, Cary. The woodcock is normally a very shy and elusive bird. In the spring however, the male performs a courtship display that is a joy to behold. The performance, which you will most likely hear more than see, includes acrobatic flight, beautiful song and a floor show. Dress for the weather and don’t be late, as he is very particular about the time and place of his performance. Admission is free for county residents age 14 and older and $6 for nonresidents. Registration deadline is Thursday, April 12.
