Elk Grove’s Guido on target

The typical tension and drama with a no-hit bid was gone early for Elk Grove senior right-hander Dan Guido.

Guido allowed a leadoff double to Wheaton North’s John Peltz in the second inning of Tuesday’s nonconference baseball game. It was the only hit Guido gave up as he threw his second shutout in as many starts and the Grenadiers (6-3) won 5-0.

Peltz’s double set up a potential big inning where Wheaton North loaded the bases with two out. Guido got a groundout to shortstop Cody Schrader to start a streak of 12 consecutive hitters retired.

Guido finished with 6 strikeouts and 3 walks and threw 62 of his 107 pitches for strikes. Jack Czeszewski went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and Mike Fox and Cody Gustafson drove in runs.

St. Viator 5, Mira Costa (Calif.) 3: Junior Patrick Martin threw a complete-game 6-hitter with 6 strikeouts as St. Viator (6-4) improved to 2-2 on its California road trip. Nick Prazuch had an RBI triple, Chris Myjak had 2 hits and a double, Kevin Patzke had 2 hits and a sacrifice fly and Cosimo Cannella and Joe Rossi doubled for the Lions.

In a JV game earlier in the day, Viator’s Greg Steiner was an out from a no-hitter when he gave up a single.

Highland Park 8, Hersey 7: Hersey appeared to be on its way to a 7-0 start until it was stunned by a 6-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning at Highland Park. Trevor Haas went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, Tyler Perkowitz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Nick Nolan drove in 2 runs as the Huskies built a 7-2 lead.

Highland Park tied it at 7-7 on a two-out, 2-run double and won it on an RBI double.

Crystal Lake South 8, Hoffman Estates 3: A 5-run top of the seventh inning by Crystal Lake South broke open a tied nonconference game at Hoffman Estates (5-6).

The Hawks tied it with a 3-run fourth as sophomore Ethan Bloom and Brian Cvitkovich hit back-to-back homers and Zach Hommowun delivered a two-out RBI single.

Downers South 5, Leyden 3: Angel Sanchez tripled and Brandon Chillemi doubled for Leyden (7-2, 1-2) as Downers Grove South took two of three games in the West Suburban Gold series.
