Wheeling erupts for first victory

Wheeling made sure there was little suspense in the first victory for new head baseball coach Matt Padron.

Nick Ricciardi took a shutout into the fifth and final inning and didn’t allow an earned run as the Wildcats (1-5) rolled to a 14-3 nonconference victory in five innings Wednesday. Ricciardi finished with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Wheeling also had four players finish with 2 hits — seniors Kalvin Thong (2 RBI), Joseph Zimmerman (2 RBI, double, 3 stolen bases) and Anthony Bacci (2 RBI) and junior Ian Gilliam (2 RBI, double).

St. Viator 6, Elk Grove 2: A potential 1-2-3 first inning turned into a 5-run outburst as St. Viator (4-3) took advantage of errors to the first three hitters in the nonconference victory. Chris Myjak had a sacrifice fly, Kevin Patzke (2-for-3) had an RBI double and Joe Rossi had an RBI single in the first.

Bobby Napoleon had 4 strikeouts in 4 innings for the win and Myjak got the save with 3 hitless innings of relief with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. Nick Prazuch also tripled for the Lions.

Jack Czeszewski had an RBI double and Adam O’Malley drove in a run for Elk Grove (4-2).

Buffalo Grove 10, Dundee-Crown 4: A wild sixth inning saw Dundee-Crown take the lead but host Buffalo Grove take control of the nonconference win.

Alex Fritz (2-for-2, 2 RBI) had a go-ahead RBI single in an 8-run sixth for the Bison as they answered a 3-run outburst in the top of the inning from D-C. Jake Fanella went 2-for-2 with a triple and 3 RBI, Jimmy Barton went 2-for-4 with a double and Jeremy Berger went 6 innings for his first varsity victory in his first varsity start.

Fremd 14, St. Charles East 4 (6 inn.): Matt Wisniewski went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and a game-ending 2-run triple and Connor Bieda went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and 2 RBI as Fremd (4-2) won its fourth straight game. Jack Andersen (3-0) went the distance with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk and drove in 2 runs and Josh Jyawook was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Schaumburg 10, Glenbard North 0 (5 inn.): Max Paoliccai got the victory for Schaumburg as Glenbard North managed only 2 hits. Matt Brancato, Jordan Grubb and Colin Bethran doubled for the Saxons.

Leyden 2, Hoffman Estates 1: Joey Diaz’s 2-run double in the top of the fifth kept Leyden (6-0) perfect as winner Anthony Aleman went 5 innings with 6 strikeouts and a walk. Mark Roberts was the tough-luck loser for Hoffman Estates (4-4) with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks in 7 innings.

Hersey 10, Auburn 6: Niko Poulos threw 5 innings of 1-hit, shutout relief as Hersey (3-0) won its second game on its central Illinois trip Tuesday. Poulos had 5 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Trevor Haas was 2-for-5 with a triple and 3 RBI and Erik Stoltzner, Josh Koutnik, Sean Hardiman and Nick Nolan had 2 hits apiece for the Huskies.
