Larson to serve lunch to Schaumburg Barn seniors

The National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Programs will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Older Americans Act Nutrition Programs on March 22.

Village President Al Larson will be serving lunch to seniors at the Schaumburg Barn on Monday, March 19. The program starts at 11:30 a.m.

Few federal programs in history have performed as effectively as these nutrition programs. Since 1972, 8 billion meals have been served to older Americans. Each day an older adult participates in the meal program means they are able to remain in their homes, maintain their independence, and not have to face the prospect of hospital or nursing home placement due to hunger.

The Congregate Nutrition Services and HomeDelivered Nutrition Services provide food and socialization for older adults in their own homes or in the community, for about $1,300 per year. This is the same cost as six days in a nursing home or one day of hospitalization. Over the last 25 years, the Community Nutrition Network has delivered or served 10,000,000 meals.

During the month of March members of Congress, local elected officials, corporate and business leaders, and others will be volunteering to serve meals in their area throughout the United States to raise awareness in the community for these programs and the financial help needed for them. Contributions will be accepted for Schaumburg’s Senior Nutrition Program. To donate, checks should be made out to the Senior Advisory Council and sent to The Barn at 231 Civic Drive, Schaumburg, IL 60193.
