Reception to honor longtime Dist. 46 teachers

The community is invited to a reception to honor longtime Elgin Area School District U-46 teachers Steve Childs, Phyllis Dunlap-Huerta, Carlos Salgado and Jerry Turnquist.

The event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at Ellis Middle School, 225 S. Liberty St., Elgin.

Salazar has spent 19 years in the district serving primarily as an English Language Learner teacher, while Dunlap-Huerta worked 29 years as an English teacher at Ellis Middle School.

Childs has been employed as a band instructor at the elementary, middle school, and senior high school level for the last 34 years. Turnquist holds the greatest amount of seniority having spent more than 41 years teaching science, math and history — likely a teaching record for men in the school district.
