Two Lake County athletes to be honored at Halas Hall on Monday

Two Lake County teens will be among the high school students receiving awards from the National Football Foundation and the Chicago Bears on Monday at Halas Hall.

Carmel Catholic High School senior Seamus Quilty will receive the Chicago Bears Community Champion Award for his community volunteer work.

And Wauconda High School senior Jake Ziolkowski will receive a college scholarship for his work on the gridiron, in the classroom and in the community.

Monday’s ceremony at the Bears’ headquarters in Lake Forest also will feature awards for Chicago-area college players and coaches.

Quilty is one of only three seniors receiving the Community Champion Award and the only one from the Northwest suburbs. The other two are Robert Delaney, a senior at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, and Jake Aleck, of Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort.

Quilty will be honored for his work with the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association, an organization he’s supported for years.

“I volunteer with GLASA throughout the year, assisting at swim practice and wheelchair basketball practice,” Quilty said in an email.

He also helps set up group events.

“Volunteering has helped me to keep my life in perspective and realize what is truly important in my life,” he said.

Quilty was also a member of the 2012 Daily Herald Lake County Leadership team.

Ziolowski is among three scholarship recipients. The other two are Luke Duffy, a senior at St. Edward Central Catholic High School in Elgin, and Max Kurucar, of St. Rita of Cascia High School in Chicago.

Ziolowski couldn’t be reached for comment.

Scholarships worth a total of $24,000 will be awarded Monday.
