Cary man sentenced to 55 years in sex assault, porn case

A Cary man was sentenced to 55 years in prison Wednesday for having sex with a girl he knew several times in 2010 and videotaping it.

John “Jack” Reed, 35, was arrested and charged by Woodstock police in spring 2011 with 16 counts of criminal sexual assault and child pornography.

According to court records, he was accused of having sex with the girl twice in January 2010, along with single instances in February, March, June and August of 2010.

A jury deliberated three hours before convicting Reed on 14 of 16 counts after a trial last November. During the trial, the jury viewed four videotapes of the assaults that were recovered from Reed’s laptop computer and analyzed by a forensic computer lab.

The jury also heard testimony from two other eyewitnesses of sexual acts between Reed and the victim. Reed’s defense was that a man held a gun to his head and made him do it to deter Reed from going to authorities report a crime the man may have committed.

McHenry County Judge Joseph Condon issued the prison term Wednesday, officials said.

Reed must serve 85 percent of his sentence, which comes to almost 47 years.

Assistant State’s Attorneys Sharyl Eisenstein and Michael Combs prosecuted the case.
