Wheaton North rolls past Batavia

It’s getting close to final exams for wrestling teams.

With the postseason quickly approaching, Wheaton North played host to Batavia on Thursday night to start the first of three days of competition for the Falcons that will close out the regular season.

Wheaton North made the most of this meet, cruising past the Bulldogs 55-15.

The Falcons return to Neibch Gym tonight to battle Wheaton Warrenville South. The team then competes Saturday at the Downers Grove South Invitational.

Wheaton North coach Steve Holland wants his team to make the most of these final tuneups in order to be fully ready for Jan. 28’s DuPage Valley Conference meet at Glenbard East.

“This is a big weekend. We want to finish the season strong and head in the right direction,” he said. “We want to look at our conditioning to make sure it’s at the right place this time of year.”

The meet started at 132 pounds and Batavia did have an early 12-8 lead, although it did start the meet having to forfeit two weight classes.

The Bulldogs’ Anthony Scaccia (138 pounds) and Lauren Eustance (152) each won by fall with Wheaton’s Elan Ramos (132, decision) and Vinnie Terrazas (145, technical fall) scoring the Falcons’ early points.

Wheaton North then proceeded to win the next five matches to blow the meet open. The victories came from Matt Ramirez (160, fall), Sean Cleveland (170, major decision), Kaelen Bradford (182, fall), Kellen Cleveland (195, decision) and Mike Swider (220, forfeit).

The Bulldogs’ final points of the night came from Alec Lyons’s win by decision at 285.

The Falcons closed the meet with four wins beginning with Keagan Caulkins’ win by fall in 3:38 at 106. He was leading 20-7 and the sophomore improved his record to 24-7.

“He had a great off-season,” Holland said of Caulkins. “Not only his technique improved but his confidence and he’s a full-size 106 pounds.”

“I think I’ve been faster on my feet and moving better. I was going for the technical fall, but I just wanted the team points,” Caulkins said.

Wins from Jacob Bretz (major decision, 113), John Cahill (120, forfeit) and Sean Murray (126, fall) closed the meet for the Falcons.

Batavia coach Ben Morris was hoping for a better result the night before the Bulldogs head to Bartlett for the two-day Upstate Eight Conference meet.

“This was a step backwards as far as intensity and learning the lessons we need to learn to win,” he said.

Morris was optimistic though about the chances for some of the Bulldogs to succeed at the league meet.

“Mickey Watson (195) Anthony Scaccia are in good position. Alec Lyons is in a tough weight class. But if he wins his first two matches, he’ll be in good position,” he said.
