Special night for Fina, Cary-Grove
It is certainly a night Matt Fina will remember for a long time.
The Cary-Grove senior 138-pounder, wrestling in the last home match of his career, knocked off Dundee-Crown’s Dillion Muscat by major decision 13-4 in helping the Trojans to a 52-16 Fox Valley Conference win over Dundee-Crown in Cary Thursday night.
“This night and this match I will remember for the rest of my life,” said Fina. “It was a special night and my best match of the season. I came out aggressive and got the first takedown. I knew I couldn’t have any let downs because (Muscat) is a very good wrestler.”
First-year Cary-Grove coach Ryan Ludwig praised Fina’s efforts.
“Matt was fantastic tonight,” said Ludwig. “He came out so aggressive and created opportunities for himself. I was excited to see him wrestle so well. He ended a great night for the seniors.”
The Trojans (10-4, 6-2) also got a win from senior 160-pounder Andy Stenard, who won by major decision 15-6 over D-C’s Dashun Lloyd.
The Trojans registered 5 pins in the match by Dale Charlier (103), Mike Cullen (113), Anthony Scrima (120), Mike Underwood (132) and Jeramey Dermont (285). Charlier pinned Dundee-Crown’s Diamond Flynn in 3:11 while Cullen pinned JeQuann Flynn in 2:32. Scrima disposed of Zach Anderson in 3:57. Underwood and Dermont registered quick pins in less than 2 minutes. Underwood defeated Martell Thompson in 1:40 and Dermont pinned Jeremy Marshall in 1:25.
Garrett Glueck (145) won by technical fall while Greer Bozeman (195) posted a win by decision and Pat O’ Malley (170) won by forfeit for the victorious Trojans.
“Tonight all the kids were fantastic,” said Ludwig. “We wrestled well and responded well after not wrestling well last week. We had good practices all week and it showed tonight.”
D-C (8-7, 0-5) claimed 4 victories on the evening. Christian Ochoa (220) was the lone Charger to claim a pin while Randy Wright (126) won by major decision. Tim Shanmier (152) and Jimmy Kuzynski (182) posted wins by decision.
“We showed a little bit of improvement tonight,” said Dundee-Crown coach Bob Skillman. “The effort was very good and all the kids really competed. We had some good individual efforts and our young wrestlers are improving. We are a little banged up, but the kids are giving a good effort.”
