Hersey gets consolation shot
Hersey's boys basketball team has a chance to come home from the 47th annual Pekin Holiday Tournament with some hardware.
The Huskies (5-7) beat King 63-53 and Bartonville Limestone 56-45 on Wednesday to advance to the consolation championship game. They will face Freeport at 2 p.m. today.
Hersey used a 21-12 fourth quarter to top Limestone in the evening game. Kevin Kozil (12 points) hit 10-of-12 free throws, Trevor Haas scored 10 points and Stefan Vucicevic and Sean Reszotko added 9 points apiece.
The Huskies just missed having five players score in double figures as it won its early consolation-bracket game against King.
Vuk Vukovic had 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting and 7 rebounds. Vucicevic (14 points), Reszotko (12 points, 8 rebounds), Kozil (12 points, 8 rebounds) and Justin Jobski (9 points, 16 rebounds) accounted for all but 1 of Hersey's points.
Hersey outrebounded King 50-39.
Carmel 67, Maine West 62: Conor Hart scored 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting and had 6 assists for Maine West (4-6) in the Wheeling Hardwood Classic consolation-bracket loss.
Kevin Garcia hit three 3s for 9 points and Tom Kukec added 9 points for the Warriors, who play Wheeling at 10:30 a.m. today. Brandon Motzel led Carmel with 25 points and 8 rebounds.
Niles North 63, Wheeling 42: Jeremy Stephani scored 20 points and hit three 3s for Wheeling (0-11) in the Wildcat Hardwood Classic consolation bracket loss. Malachi Nix had 20 points and 5 assists to lead Niles North (6-5), which plays Carmel at 2 p.m. today.
Loyola 60, Streamwood 57: Jack Morrissey scored his 30 points by tying the tournament record with 10 3-pointers for Loyola in the consolation bracket. Colin Falls of Loyola (2002) and Mike Kane of Maine West (1991) also hit 10 3s.
Conant 57, Perspectives 37: Sean Bourke scored 14 points and Mitch Tednes had 10 points as Conant (8-4) won the consolation bracket game in York's Jack Tosh Classic. D'Angelo McBride added 9 points for the Cougars.
South Elgin 43, Palatine 31: John Millin scored 11 points as Palatine (1-10) lost the consolation bracket game at York.
Leyden 66, West Chicago 55: Alex Herrera scored 32 points and hit five 3s and Jonny Woolf added 13 points as Leyden (7-3) improved to 2-0 in pool play in the Glenbard West tournament. The Eagles will play the unbeaten Hilltoppers at 8 p.m. today.
Christian Liberty 46, Faith Lutheran 19: Marcus Silva scored 12 points, Kyle Moriarty added 7 points and Luke Comerouski and Mike Hennek added 6 apiece as Christian Liberty (5-5) rolled in the Alden-Hebron Tournament.
