Wheaton Warrenville South routs Providence

In case there were any doubts, Wheaton Warrenville South remains a very powerful girls basketball team.

After struggling through its first two losses of the season last week in the round-robin portion of the Benet/Naperville North Holiday Tournament, the Tigers rebounded for their second consecutive tournament victory Friday night in Naperville, clobbering Providence 58-27.

“It feels really good to get back into winning and working together again,” junior guard Sierra Bisso said.

It was the second consecutive night the Tigers had held a 40-point lead.

“It’s good that we came over and came to play after last week,” Tigers coach Rob Kroehnke said. “It’s bad that we’ve got to go through two nights like this, but you know what? We’re 12-2. I’ll take it.”

The game went the Tigers’ way right from the start. They never trailed, taking a 13-3 lead barely more than five minutes in on a Dana Miller basket. The lead went to 25-4 early in the second quarter on Bisso’s four-point play, then 35-4 midway through the period when Bisso hit another 3-pointer off an inbounds pass from Meghan Waldron.

WW South led 41-7 at halftime. Providence made just 20 percent of its shots in the game.

Bisso paced WW South with 18 points, making 5 of her 6 attempts from 3-point range.

“I tried to work on my shot in the beginning,” Bisso said. “I really worked on my form, and I was really hoping that helped today.”

“When somebody plays zone, she gets a little smile on her face, there’s no doubt about it,” Kroehnke said. “She was on tonight. When people are keying on Kasey (Gassensmith) and Meghan and she can come up like that, that’s great. That really helps.”

Junior Allie Zappia came off the bench to score 12 points and grab 5 rebounds.

“She’s been doing great, working on her rebounding and her defense,” Kroehnke said. “Offensively, we know she can put the ball in the basket. ... Allie missed those first seven games when she hurt her knee the first game of the year, and she’s coming back strong. Physically, mentally, she’s getting there, so we’re excited.”

Gassensmith added 10 points and Waldron 8 in limited minutes.
