Enjoy a 19th century farm Christmas
While residents of some smaller communities might think of Schaumburg as big and crass — particularly around the holidays — they just have no idea of all the varied opportunities the village offers at this time of year.
How many bedroom communities, for example, have a place where Christmas can still be observed just like it was by 19th century farm families?
The Schaumburg Park District, in cooperation with Whole Foods Market, is presenting “Christmas in the Valley” from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 3-4 at Spring Valley Nature Center’s Volkening Heritage Farm and Merkle Log Cabin.
The event allows guests to see how German-American farm families celebrated the season more than 100 years ago, with traditional foods, homemade gifts and the continuation of their daily farm chores.
Visitors will meet a traditional St. Nicholas and enjoy a cup of soup by the log cabin’s fireplace. The event will include refreshments, holiday treats, cookie decorating for kids and craft activities.
Admission is $2 per person or $8 per family of six or fewer. Additional family members are $2 each, and children 3 and under are free.
Parking is available at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road. Shuttle bus transportation will be provided to Heritage Farm.
