St. Edward Green Wave

Coach: P.J. White (second season, 7-21)

Last year: 7-21, 2-8, Suburban Christian Gold; lost 60-57 to Mendota in the Class 2A Plano regional play-in game.

Top players: seniors Troy Gudino (5-11, G), Eddie O’Halloran (6-0, G), Doug Johnson (6-3, F), Zack McQueen (), Troy Wagner (5-7, G), Patrick Puckett (5-11, F), Kevin Phelan (6-0, G); juniors Antonio Domel (5-7, G), Jack Kelly (6-3, F), Adrian Ponce (6-3, F)

Scouting report: Considering this team lost the area’s leading scorer and assist man in Michael Ellis and faces a very difficult schedule, this rebuilding squad’s goals are set realistically. “I’m not sugar coating it. We’ve told our players the goal is to win 10 games,” said second-year coach P.J. White, also the school’s athletic director. “If we do that, we’ll have done a very good job. That would be great for us with the teams we’re going to play. It’s a rebuilding year.” The Class 2A Green Wave did bow out of the Jacobs Holiday Tournament, filled with 4A schools, in favor of the more reasonable tournament at Immaculate Conception against like-sized schools. The Green Wave will try to improve its defense. They were last in the area last season, allowing 62 ppg. The offense starts with senior Eddie O’Halloran. The guard has a nice touch from 3-point range. He’s coming off a season in which he averaged 12.5 ppg. O’Halloran will bring the ball up court. Troy Gudino played significant minutes last year. He’ll be asked to score more and be a team leader, White said. Doug Johnson played sparingly but will start this season. He’ll be asked to play inside and outside and rebound. Ponce becomes the team’s main man in the paint. McQueen saw some playing time last year. He’s a hard worker who could clean the glass and score off putbacks. Jack Kelly (6-3) will be part of the low-post rotation for the Wave. Troy Wagner is a guard who transferred from Bartlett.
