Century Oaks collecting winter gear for local families

Last season’s winter coat that is days away from emerging from the back of the closet could help a local family keep warm this winter.

Century Oaks Elementary School in Elgin is collecting gently used and new coats, mittens or gloves, snow pants, winter hats and scarves in all sizes for its annual coat giveaway.

The event, which benefits about 200 families at the school, is slated for 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8 at the school, 1235 Braeburn Drive.

“In the winter we ask teachers to take note of the number of students who are not dressed appropriately for the cold weather,” said Kathy Marden, principal at Century Oaks. “We know there is a definite need just by observing our students.”

But Marden said winter wear is needed for all members of the family, from toddlers to adults.

In the past, Marden said, the school has collected about 400 coats including items from corporate partner Sanfilippo & Sons in Elgin and Century Oaks’ sister school, Kildare Countryside School.

Clothing that is not claimed during the giveaway is donated to Washington Elementary School in Elgin, Marden said.

Also on the night, the student council will open its “Chitter Chatter Cafe” where students will sell hot chocolate and baked goods to raise money for the school, Marden said.

“It really is a wonderful event,” Marden said. “It’s our way of giving service to the school community.”

Donations can be left at the school between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. weekdays.
