Schaumburg school remembers Sept. 11

On Friday, Sept. 9, the staff and students of Aldrin School in Schaumburg assembled at the flagpole to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the events of Sept. 11, 2001. As the flag was raised, Principal Mary Botterman led the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. The entire group then sang “We Remember.”

The theme for the entire day was “Heroes.” Teachers discussed with their classes the heroes of Sept. 11. Since many of the students were too young to remember the attacks on The World Trade Center, that information was reviewed with older grade levels. The main concept presented at all grades was that “a hero is a person who is admired for having done something very brave or having achieved something great.”

Students discussed and wrote about “Who are your heroes?” and “What have these heroes done that makes them an important hero.” These completed papers were later collected and then sent to the veteran heroes at the VA hospital.

Later in the day, as a follow-up to the day’s activities and theme of “Heroes,” students were given an all-school home work assignment. Students were asked to emulate the heroic deeds of the heroes of Sept. 11, and do a good deed at home. A good deed was defined as, “Doing something nice without being told to do it.”
