Libertyville volleys for cure against Mundelein

It will be a special night of volleyball at Libertyville High School on Wednesday.

The Wildcats will host a “Volley for the Cure” in their match against Mundelein.

The teams will be raising awareness and funds for the Susan G. Komen foundation and breast cancer awareness.

Various raffles will be held and pink T-shirts will be available for those in attendance. The suggested donation at the door is $5 per person.

Men’s soccer

Wisconsin’s Nick Janus (Lake Zurich) was named the Big Ten men’s soccer Offensive Player of the Week.

The sopohomore midfielder scored 3 points on 1 goal and an assist in the Badgers’ 2-0 win over No. 6 Indiana. He assisted on the game-winning goal and scored the second goal against the Hoosiers.

It was the first weekly award of his career.

Men’s cross country

Middlebury College freshman Kevin Wood (Stevenson) was 12th among 200 runners at the 16-team Purple Valley Classic in Williamstown, Ma.

Middlebury was third behind host Williams College, a D-1 team from Fordham. Middlebury beat 10th-ranked New York University.

Wood was the second runner for Middlebury, which is ranked 13th in the nation among Division III programs.

Ÿ North Central junior Matt Perez (Hoffman Estates) finished seventh in the Notre Dame with a team-best time of 25:16.

Ÿ North Central sophomore Aaron Ferst (Fremd) finished eighth in the Cardinal Classic in Warrenville with a team-best time of of 26:35.

Men’s golf

Playing as an individual, Carthage sophomore Ben Schroeder (Mundelein) tied for third place with a 76 and junior Dominic Madrigano (Grayslake-Central), also playing as an individual, tied for sixth with a 78 when the Red Men won the eight-team Concordia University Elite Eight Invitational at the North Shore Country Club in Mequon, Wis.

The Red Men won with a 299 team score, 16 strokes ahead of second-place Wheaton College.

Lady Junior Blue Devils

The Warren Lady Jr. Blue Devils basketball program is holding its tryouts Tuesday, Oct. 18 and Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the Hunt Club Park Community Center (920 Hunt Club Rd. in Gurnee) from 7:15 p.m.-8:45 p.m.

Junior Cougars

Football

North Dakota State senior Scott Stoczynski (Hoffman Estates) was credited with 2 solo tackles, 1 pass break up, and 1 quarterback hurry as the Bison defeated Illinois State 20-10 in Fargo.

Sam Ojuri (Barrington) had 5 carries for 31 yards for the Bison.

Stoczynski also had 2 tackles, including a sack, when the Bison (4-0) beat Minnesota 37-24 a week earlier. Ojuri scored a touchdown in that game.

Pro volleyball

Ingrid Hanson-Tunland (Wheeling) has been selected to play for Denmark. Formerly of Katrineholm, Sweden, the former Wheeling and University of North Carolina standout is now playing for Vordingborg, Denmark.

Women’s cross country

North Central’s Kala Bingham (Barrington) was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin women’s runner of the week.

Bingham placed third at Wheaton’s Dodds Invitational, finishing the 6K with a time of 22:04.14. As a team, the Cardinals placed second in the five-team meet, just behind nationally ranked Washington (Mo.).

Hall of Fame

Later this month, the St. Viator Athletic Hall of Fame will add several new faces as well as standout teams.

A dedication ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 22 will start at 5:30 p.m. in the Boler Center at the high school.

The 2011 individual inductees are Joe Majkowski, Chuck Henrich, Josh Kay, Jennifer Ansani Kottra, Mike Manno, Bob Moynihan, Jarrett Payton, Mark Rossi and John Vandenbergh.

Team inductees include basketball (1985-86), football (2000-01), soccer (2000-01) and cheerleading (2000-01) while the Robert C. Artman Award goes to Susie McNamara recognizing the “Sports Person of the Year”.
