Probe continues into shooting involving off-duty Wood Dale cop

A Hoffman Estates man remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound after a weekend altercation at an off-duty Wood Dale police officer's home in an unincorporated area near Wheaton.

Kerin Ramirez, 19, was in fair condition Tuesday afternoon, according to a spokeswoman at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

DuPage County sheriff's deputies said they responded at 7 a.m. Saturday to a report of an intruder at the home of a 14-year veteran of the Wood Dale Police Department. When they arrived, they said, the officer was struggling with Ramirez.

During the scuffle, authorities said, Ramirez was shot and had to be taken to the hospital. The officer suffered minor injuries and also was hospitalized. He has since been released.

Ramirez is a second-year student and wrestler at Harper College studying education, according to school officials. He is a graduate of Addison Trail High School.

Wood Dale Chief Greg Vesta said the officer remains with his family and has not returned to work under a rule that allows time off for family emergencies.

“My focus is to make sure the Wood Dale Police Department is doing everything we can to assist him and his family and get them the support they need at this time,” he said.

Vesta said the last time a Wood Dale officer was involved in a shooting was 12 years ago.

DuPage County State's Attorney Bob Berlin would not comment other than to say the case remains under investigation and more information should be available early next week.

“I am not going to confirm any facts other than that it remains under investigation,” he said.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Dawn Domrose said she had no further information.
