W. Chicago Police create a commemorative 9/11 chair for CHS Fundraiser

West Chicago, Illinois: September 2, 2011 – Artistic creativity resides in every corner of the community, and this year, the West Chicago Police Department showed a hefty dose of talent when asked to participate in the Community High School District #94 Education Foundation's “Sit & Set” Art Auction, for things you sit upon or set things on.

The event will raise money for the foundation through an auction of hand-decorated seats, benches, etc. at the Autumn Flame 2011 dinner, this year held at St. Andrews Country Club on Route 59 in West Chicago, on Saturday, Sept. 24.

According to Commander Spence Kroning, “A wide variety of chairs are used for this type of event, from expensive leather reclining chairs to economical folding metal chairs, with the most popular being wooden Adirondack patio chairs.”

After recruiting ideas and support from the entire Department, Commander Kroning said the task was clear - create a chair themed to combine the Department's professional pride and the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.

Once the theme was settled, the project immediately picked up steam and a reproduction of an antique metal patio chair and table was purchased locally for a reasonable price. “This was a good choice for our project because this type of chair can be used indoors or out, they offer a more solid surface for design and creative art and they are easier to achieve a high quality paint finish with less preparation work,” he said.

Commander Kroning credits Police Chief Laz Perez, Deputy Chief Mike Uplegger and all of the Department members who offered their input, ideas, support and/or contributions toward this project.

“The resulting seating ensemble of two chairs and a small round table, with its commemorative theme, should spark memories and conversations of 9/11, reflect positively on the Department, and hopefully be the talk of the event with a measurable wow factor, that will benefit the Foundation's goal of raising funds for the benefit of CHS students.”
