MSL power Hersey opens with volleyball victory

Three-time defending Mid-Suburban League girls volleyball champion Hersey opened its season with a 25-18, 25-23 nonconference victory at Libertyville.

Seniors Kelsey Haas (9 kills), Maggie Hogen (7 kills) and Kristen Pedersen (6 kills) led the Hersey attack, set by junior Abby Fesl (25 assists). Libero Taylor Schill added 13 digs.

In her first match as outside hitter after playing right side a year ago, Hogen also had 1 block.

“Maggie is such an athlete,” said Huskies coach Nancy Lill. “She knows how to compete.”

Junior Erica Hill (3 kills) put down match point for the Huskies.

Barrington d. Mundelein: Barrington improved to 2-0 under first-year coach Rob Ridenaur with a 25-23, 25-18 nonconference triumph at Mundelein.

Junior middle hitter Lauren Shechtman (9 kills) and junior Peyton Lang (8 kills) led the Fillies’ attack set by senior Lauren Dunseith (18 assists). Amanda Dee had 8 digs for the winners.

Fremd d. Vernon Hills: Junior Rebecca Clarke (6 kills), junior Claire Brady (5 kills) led the attack for Fremd (1-0) in a 25-16, 25-22 nonconference win at Vernon Hills. Vikings setter Marilyn Lortz collected 8 assists while Nina Scott had 10 digs. Brady added 3 blocks and teammate Jessi Wiedemann 2.
