Fire damages Schaumburg home, kills dog

A kitchen fire that filled a Schaumburg home with smoke Thursday afternoon killed a family’s pet dog and forced the residents from their home, according to fire officials.

The mother of the household was returning with her family to the split-level home on the 1300 block of Sharon Lane at around 4:05 p.m. and found heavy smoke throughout the house when she opened the garage door, fire officials said.

The family immediately evacuated and dialed 911, said Schaumburg Fire Captain Frank Chambers.

Responding firefighters found the house filled with heavy smoke, but quickly located the fire in the kitchen near the rear of the house and brought it under control within 10 minutes, Chambers said.

Although the fire was contained to the kitchen, smoke damaged multiple areas of the home, which was deemed uninhabitable by the village’s building department, officials said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Thursday night.

Officials estimated the damages to the home and contents at $150,000, Chambers said.

None of the family, who was staying at a hotel Thursday night, was injured, but the family’s dog died in the fire.
