Crystal Lake girl in critical condition

An 8-year-old girl is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning as she was crossing the street on her bicycle in Crystal Lake.

Police said the Crystal Lake girl was attempting to cross North Avenue at the T-intersection of Millard Avenue when her bicycle collided with the front corner of the vehicle about 7:35 a.m., knocking her unconscious, said Crystal Lake Police Deputy Chief Gene Lowery.

Police said the girl's 12-year-old brother crossed the street ahead of her.

A medical helicopter landed at West Elementary School and flew the girl to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon, Lowery said.

“The driver has been cooperating fully with police,” he said. “Unfortunately, it looks like a tragic accident.”

Police said the 39-year-old Lakewood man driving the 2004 Acura TL had not been cited as of Wednesday afternoon, and there was no evidence the driver was at fault. Police said vehicles have the right-of-way at the T-intersection
