Westminster Christian-Walther Lutheran suspended
The Class 2A sectional semifinal baseball game between Westminster Christian and Walther Lutheran held at Benedictine University was suspended after one eventful inning Wednesday with Westminster Christian leading 3-1.
With standing water already puddled in spots near the edges of the field due to heavy morning rains in Lisle, grounds officials suspended the contest proactively in order to tarp the field before a large, approaching thunderstorm arrived.
The game will be resumed today at 4:30 p.m. in the top of the second inning with Walther Lutheran coming to bat.
The Broncos jumped to a 1-0 lead against Westminster Christian starting pitcher Kevin Elder when a player slipped on the outfield grass and was unable to make a play on Josh Galvan’s popup, which went for a double.
The Warriors responded well in their half of the inning. Ryan Perez hit a one-out double, and Elder singled and advanced to second base on the throw to third. Frank Oliver then belted a 2-run double to give the 2010 Class 1A state champions their first lead, 2-1. Ben Stevenson made it 3-1 when he drove in Oliver from third with a perfect squeeze bunt.
Elder, who struck out 3 hitters in his only inning of work, said he’d like to finish what he started if possible.
“It depends on how I feel,” Elder said. “If I feel good, I’ll go. If not, Ryan (Perez) will go. I’m sure I’ll pitch at some point.”
