Baseball/Fox Valley roundup
Elgin Community College saw its baseball season come to an end Friday with two losses at the NJCAA Region IV tournament.
The Spartans gave up 5 runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and fell to Madison 9-8, then were eliminated by Kankakee 9-1.
Brett Loeding took the loss against Madison. Craig Lipp had a home run for ECC, Brady Renner added a double and Justin Kalusa (4-for-6) had 2 RBI.
“It was a tough loss,” said ECC coach Bill Angelo. “We couldn’t get the three outs we needed.”
The Spartans (41-16) then got blown out by Kankakee in the elimination game. Lipp had a double and George Tintera had 2 hits and Ryan Hudspeth took the loss for ECC.
“It was a tough way for our season to end this way,” Angelo said. “But I’m proud of their efforts.”

Jacobs 4, Johnsburg 1: Henry Giegeous (5-3) allowed just 1 hit in 5 innings and had 8 strikeouts to lead Jacobs (13-18, 11-13) to a Fox Valley Conference win. Connor Conzelman (2B, RBI), Giegeous (2-for-2, 2B) and Ken Finn (2 RBI) led the Jacobs offense.
Marian Central 3, CL South 2: Chris Hauser had a double and was the losing pitcher for the Gators (18-11) in this nonconference loss.
Hampshire 10, Sandwich 9: The Whip-Purs (14-13) got 3 hits each from Luke Wians and Danny Grzywa and two from Dylan Nihells in this nonconference win. Jake Kuhn was the winning pitcher.
Batavia 6, South Elgin 5: South Elgin’s bid for the co-championship in the Upstate Eight Valley Division was losty with this setback at Batavia. Ryan Ford and Daniel Heine each had 2 hits for the Storm (22-9, 16-9). Nevan Jeske suffered the loss.
Grayslake Central 11, Huntley 7: Nick Carpolando (2 RBI) and Colin Lyman (HR, 3 RBI) each had 3 hits for Huntley (21-9, 16-7) in this FVC loss. Bryce Only added 2 hits and 2 RBI for the Red Raiders. Justin Gundlach was the losing pitcher.
Burlington Central 6, Dundee-Crown 3: Ray Hunnicutt was 3-for-4 with a triple and Luke Fleming 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Rockets (21-7) to a nonconference win. Sam Klein added a double for BC and Zach Ranney (3-1) was the winning pitcher. Jake Romano had 3 hits including a home run for the Chargers (21-13), while Nick Spagnola and Corey Vorberding each had doubles.
College baseball
Judson falls: Judson lost its fourth straight game at the NCCAA World Series in Mason, Ohio, falling to Mount Vernon Nazarene 10-1. Nate Rohl had a hit for Judson, his 73rd career hit which breaks the Judson school record.
