Barrington churns out win over Jacobs
It took a little over a half for the Barrington offensive machine to get on track.
But once the Fillies got going, Jacobs had no chance.
Top-seeded Barrington scored 3 unanswered goals in the second half in posting a 3-0 win over second-seeded Jacobs in the championship game of the Class 3A Barrington regional Friday night at Barrington Stadium.
“We had good ball movement in the first half, but we hit a post and missed some good chances,” said Barrington coach Ryan Stengren. “We didn’t change any strategy at halftime. We knew we were getting good shots. We just had to finish.”
Barrington (15-6-1) advances to the Class 3A Jacobs sectional, where it will play Huntley at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Huntley defeated DeKalb 5-1 Friday in the Rockford Jefferson regional final.
“They are ranked sixth in the nation and have 10 kids going on to play in college,” said Stengren of Huntley. “Nobody expects us to win this game — except for the girls on this team.”
After a scoreless first half, the Fillies didn’t waste any time scoring during the second 40 minutes of play. Taking a perfect feed from Aimee Pierce, Molly Pfeiffer blasted a shot past Jacobs senior goalie Monica Orjuela with only 47 seconds elapsed in the second half.
The Fillies seized control of the game with 2 goals in a 1:20 span. Pierce scored an unassisted goal at the 18:18 mark while Pfeiffer scored without an assist with 16:58 left in the contest.
Barrington outshot Jacobs 17-2. The Golden Eagles (20-7), who didn’t have a shot on goal in the first half, didn’t get their first shot on goal until 26:05 remained in the game.
Cassidy Sherman hammered a shot on goal from 20 yards out, but Barrington goalie Kelly Pedersen made the save.
Orjuela kept the Golden Eagles in the game with 10 saves.
“They put a strong press on us the whole game,” said Jacobs coach AJ Cappello. “They were so quick to the ball and it was hard to find any rhythmn. When they got that second goal, we just didn’t respond very well. We thought if we kept it to a 1-goal game we had a chance.
“We had a great season. We have 18 kids back so we are looking forward to next year.”
Huntley 5, DeKalb 1: Aimee Wronski scored a hat trick to lead the Red Raiders (19-1-1) to the Class 3A Rockford Jefferson regional championship. Bre Burry and Delaney Loprieno also scored goals for Huntley, while Rachel Zobott, Loprieno, Burry and Wronski each had assists. Katylyn Owens made 3 saves in goal for Huntley.
