Viator rallies past Nazareth in 11

St. Viator’s softball team made things dramatic on Thursday for its 10th win of the season.

The host Lions earned a 4-3 victory over visiting Nazareth in 11 innings as they came back from a 3-2 deficit.

St. Viator tied the game with 1 run in the bottom of the seventh , then won it in the bottom of the 11th on an RBIN single by Gina Mastrodomenico (5-for-5). Kelly O’Brien (2-4) scored from second base.

O’Brien had led off the inning with a single up the middle and went to second on Ally Joyce’s sacrifice bunt.

The Lions opened the scoring in the first inning with a leadoff home run by Alex Flasch (3-5, 2 RBI).

One out later, Michelle Presslak hit the first pitch over the fence to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Nazareth tied the game with 2 runs in the sixth took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Mastrodomenico scored the tying run on an RBI single by Flasch.

Julie Sweeney (9-15) threw a complete game with 10 strikeouts in her final game on the St. Viator diamond.

“Julie did an excellent job keeping the Lions in the game until the 11th inning,” said Linc coach Dan Twarog. “This was senior day and all six of my seniors contributed in a big way to this win.”

Jaclyn Koziol and Angelica Dickey (2-5) sparked the defense.

“Julie Sweeney and Tayler Lenart have played together as pitcher and catcher at the varsity level for all four years,” Twarog added. “O’Brien and Joyce played a great outfield and came up with key at bats in the extra innings.”

Hoffman Estates 13, Wheeling 4: Emily Fett (2-for-4), Alex Tuminaro (3-for-5, double), Nicole LaBeck (2-for-3, double), Taylor Mann (2-for-5) and Kelsey Pellus (double) led visiting Hoffman (7-23).

Sophomore Sara Kern belted a home run for Wheeling (5-20) while other top hitters were Taylor Schroeder 2-3, Jackie Resnick (2-2, double) and Ashley Hafertepe (2-for-4, double).

Christian Liberty 31, Chicago Hope 11: Megan Krizanovic (5-for-6) hit for the cycle and collected 4 RBI and 6 runs for the Chargers in the semifinals of the Class 1A Morgan Park Academy regional on Tuesday.

Zoe Whyte (4-of-5, 3 RBI), Carly Baric (4-of-6 and Jenna Pavlik (3-of-4, 2 RBI) were other offensive leaders for the Chargers, who had 26 hits. Amber Monasterio was the winning pitcher.

Fremd-Palatine softball: A total of $2,086.50 was raised at the Fremd-Palatine softball game last week to support the cure for Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Fremd coach Jim Weaver and Palatine coach Jeff Manz are the son in laws of former Rolling Meadows coach and teacher Dennis Lynch, who was honored before the game and is battling Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

“We are so lucky and so blessed to be surrounded by such first class, wonderful people,” Weaver said. “ “We want thank everyone for their support in raising these funds for a great cause.”
