Jones sets the tone as Mundelein rolls
Two goals.
A steal.
An assist.
Mundelein senior Alexis Jones did all of the above in about a minute of water polo action Friday afternoon.
“Insane, huh?” said classmate Emily Tylka, the Mustangs’ goalkeeper. “She usually is all over the place in games.”
Jones amassed 7 goals in a 13-3 defeat of the host school in a Vernon Hills girls sectional semifinal. Teammate Sarah Honda tallied two for the top seeds.
“We like to get it done, defensively, and we did that today,” said Mundelein coach Drew Schneider. “Offensively, we want to be efficient; we were pretty efficient.”
VH (13-7) enjoyed its best season in program history.
“I started coaching here when these seniors were freshmen,” said VH coach Shona Moeller. “I grew with them.”
Mundelein (25-6) faces No. 2 Stevenson (24-8) for the sectional title today at noon.
Stevenson 13, Wheeling 5: Stevenson lost twice to Mundelein in the regular season.
Round 3 is today – for a sectional title.
“Our coaches want us to unleash our strengths,” Patriots junior Erin McCook said after scoring 3 goals in a semifinal victory Friday. “We have so much potential, and we can’t wait to play Mundelein again.”
Senior Shelby Kohalmy also found the net three times for Stevenson.
Wheeling junior Leah Malsom netted 3 goals.
“A true leader, with amazing talent – and what a quick shot,” said Wildcats coach Bob Savitt of Malsom, a 6-footer who also plays hoops and music (She performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival).
