Boys volleyball / Lake roundup

Seniors Garrett Kubacki and David Swanson each slammed 7 kills, as Vernon Hills’ boys volleyball team celebrated Senior Night with a 25-8, 25-11 win over Lakes.

The victory hiked the Cougars’ record to 24-4 overall and 8-1 in the North Suburban Conference.

Senior Justin Opitz pounded 4 kills and set 26 of 28 with 16 assists. Senior Mikey Kelly added 4 kills and a team-best 9 kills. Seniors Joseph Ho and Nick Garpow had 6 and 5 block kills, respectively.

“We had all seven seniors in the lineup, and they really ran the offense at a high level,” Cougars coach Chris Curry said.

Vernon Hills hosts a tournament this weekend. The field includes Glenbard West, Highland Park, Glenbrook South, St. Patrick and Whitney Young.

Stevenson d. Zion-Benton: Nik Antonijevic and Danny Gescheidle pounded 8 and 7 kills, respectively, leading the Patriots to a 25-20, 25-17 win that kept them undefeated in the North Suburban Conference.

Aaron Zalewski added 6 kills for Stevenson (27-4, 6-0), which also got 3 aces from Stefan Boes, while Zachary Kravits was 50-of-50 setting with 20 assists and 5 kills.

Darien Wu led the winners with 14 digs.

Mundelein d. Lake Zurich: Parker Tortorello and Corey Flores each had 8 kills, as the Mustangs outlasted the Bears 25-17, 19-25, 25-21 in the North Suburban Conference match.

Mundelein (14-13, 4-4) got 3 blocks apiece from Tortorello, Balke Burton and David Ramer, while Joey Timmerman contributed 25 assists and 2 aces. David Collins collected 15 digs and was 24 of 25 on serve-receive. Burton and Jamie Jahen each had 3 kills.

Lake Forest d. North Chicago: The Scouts won the North Suburban Conference battle 25-7, 25-8, as Kris Hawkins hammered 6 kills.

Lake Forest (14-13, 5-3) received 5 kills apiece from Michael Andhur, Michael Simet and Alex Flagstad. Nick Steffens dished out 13 assists.
