The Crystal Lake South baseball team knocked Huntley out of first place in the Valley Division of the Fox Valley Conference with a 5-3 victory in Huntley Tuesday.
CL South starting pitcher Nick Martin (5-2) held the Red Raiders to 3 earned runs on 4 hits in 5 innings. He struck out 8 and minimized the damage from 5 walks. Dom Winiecki scored and drove in 2 runs and Chris Morrison doubled, scored and drove in a run for the Gators (15-7, 11-6), who ended a 3-game skid.
Jake Staab (6-1) took the loss after allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits with 4 walks and a strikeout in 5 innings. The Red Raiders committed 3 errors.
The defeat dropped Huntley (19-4, 14-3) a game behind idle McHenry (18-7, 17-2) in the loss column.
Jacobs 2, Woodstock 1: Brett Kale tossed a complete-game 3-hitter with 9 strikeouts to lead the Golden Eagles to a Fox Valley Conference road win. Nate Andersen went 2-for-4, scored and drove in a run, and Henry Gigeous doubled and drove in a run for Jacobs (10-13, 8-8).
Burlington Central 13, Harvard 3: Senior Sam Klein improved to 6-1 by holding the Hornets to 2 earned runs on 5 hits in 5 innings. He struck out 11 and walked 3. Joey Lange doubled twice and drove in 2 runs, Tanner Scott went 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBI and Bryan Leist was 2-for-3 with a double and 5 RBI in this Big Northern East home win for Burlington Central (15-7, 7-2).
Hampshire 6, Marengo 5: The visiting Indians scored 4 runs in the top of the seventh to tie the Big Northern East game 5-5, but Tyler Crater led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and Dan Guerrero hit a walk-off double for Hampshire (12-8, 5-2). Crater (4-2) earned the win in relief of sophomore starting pitcher Shane Hernandez, who allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits in 6 innings. He struck out 5 and walked none.
St. Patrick 20, Elgin 13: Javier Cardenas went 3-for-3 with a home run and 4 RBI, Jake Bartelt homered and drove in a pair and Joe Quick tripled and drove in 3 runs, but it wasn’t enough to overcome an 18-hit afternoon by the Shamrocks in this nonconference road loss. Alex Doty (1-3) took the loss for Elgin (2-22-1, 2-20-1).
St. Charles East 15, Larkin 5: The Saints moved into sole possession of first place in the UEC River by virtue of this conference win in Elgin. St. Charles East held a 5-2 lead in the seventh inning when the Saints exploded for 10 runs to seal the win. Miguel Villafane (3-4) allowed 5 earned runs on 3 hits in 5 innings, and Kyle Newquist went 3-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBI for Larkin (9-16, 3-15), which lost its seventh straight and 11th in 12 outings.
