Sherman sisters leads Jacobs to win
Cassidy Sherman simply measured the gusty winds perfectly.
With the breeze blowing around 35 miles per hour, Sherman lofted a 40-yard shot over the outstretched arms of Crystal Lake South goalkeeper Elizabeth Quinn with 12:50 remaining in the game, a knock that was assisted by Cassidy Sherman’s sister Catie.
The goal was enough to produce a 1-0 win for the Golden Eagles in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play at South Tuesday afternoon.
“With the way the wind was blowing I had no idea the ball was going in the net.” said Cassidy Sherman. “I knew I hit the ball well and hard and was hoping the ball would be on goal. It was a sloppy game, but we were finally able to capitalize on an opportunity. This was a great win against a very good team.”
Jacobs coach AJ Cappello was impressed with Cassidy Sherman’s accuracy against the howling winds.
“Cassidy has a great leg and she really strikes the ball hard,” said Cappello. “It was a great shot from that far out. We did a great job of keeping our composure in windy conditions.”
South (10-7-2, 5-2) outshot Jacobs (13-5, 4-1) 7-3. Jacobs goalie Megan Minogue made 4 saves while Quinn had 1 save for the Gators.
“We certainly would have liked to have had more shots on goal,” said Cappello. “We didn’t create a lot of scoring opportunities, but we stayed mentally tough and played good defense. This is a key win in the conference.”
The Gators had two golden scoring opportunities to score against Minogue, but the junior was up to the challenge.
In the first half, Gator senior Kali Loescher blasted a shot from 10 yards out on goal, but Minogue made a diving save. With 3:25 left before intermission, Emily Schoenfeldt had a breakaway shot on goal and Minogue was able to tip the ball over the net to preserve the shutout.
“Megan didn’t have to make a lot of saves but she made some great saves,” said Cappello. “Megan gave us a chance to win.”
Crystal Lake South coach Brian Allen praised both teams.
“We had a lot of good opportunities to score and played a smart soccer game,” said the Gator coach. “This was a great soccer match with a playoff atmosphere. Credit Jacobs with a match well played. They certainly earned the W.”
