West Chicago to Pick an Official City Flower
West Chicago, Illinois: April 19, 2011 – West Chicago is closer to having an officially designated city flower. Nominations have been steadily arriving at City Hall, the City Museum, and Gallery 200, as well as through online submission at www.westchicago.org.
A deeply rooted tradition and pride in the many outstanding public and private gardens throughout the community prompted the City of West Chicago in March to announce its search for an official flower in conjunction with the annual downtown garden festival, Blooming Fest. Since then, the responses have confirmed that interest. “We have heard from people from all over the community expressing their opinions, supported by good reasons, for which flower should be chosen,” said Rosemary Mackey of the City of West Chicago. “A page has been created on the City's website to capture some of the interesting rationales being offered,” she said.
The deadline for nominations is Friday, May 13, 2011. Hand-written nominations may be dropped off at the three locations: City Hall, 475 Main Street; Gallery 200, 200 Main Street; or the City Museum, 132 Main Street. Plus, online nomination is available at www.westchicago.org. The most convincing nominations will be chosen for a communitywide vote at Blooming Fest, scheduled on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the City booth which will be located on Main Street from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Residents are asked to take a moment to visit the booth and cast their ballot. The winning flower will be announced the following week.
