Schaumburg’s Lesiewicz defends indoor title

A successful sequel wasn’t as dramatic as the original for Schaumburg senior Karen Lesiewicz in the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic on Saturday.

Lesiewicz defended her Class 3A title in the 1,600 meters in 4:59.61 in what is considered the unofficial indoor state meet. She finished 5.33 seconds ahead of Bartlett’s Alyssa Schroeder at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Shirk Center in Bloomington.

Lesiewicz won the Top Times 3A 1,600 by just .37 seconds a year ago. She is also the defending IHSA 3A state champ in the outdoor 1,600 and helped Schaumburg win the 3A cross country title in the fall.

Lesiewicz also combined with Hannah Coombs, Colette Falsey and Britten Petrey to win the 3,200 relay in 9:20.59. And Conant pulled off a hurdle title double play as Sarah Gorden won the 55 girls title in 8.35 seconds and Ben Bowers won the 55 boys title in 7.53 seconds.

Prospect senior Nick Batcha took second in the 55 meters (6.43) to Stevenson’s Brandon Stryganek (6.39).

Batcha took third in the 200 (22.27) and was part of a second-place 800 relay (1:31.49) with Vito Anzalone, Andre Barnes and Chris Meersman.

Defending 3A girls shot put champion Precious Ogunleye of Hoffman Estates took second at 43 feet, 6 inches. That was better than her winning toss of 42-4 last year.

Brian Bobek of Fremd was third in the boys shot (53-11).
