St. Edward tops Elgin Academy in opener

Youth was served in St. Edward’s 2-1 victory over Elgin Academy in the season opener for both girls soccer programs Tuesday.

Freshman Alison Kruk gave the Green Wave a 1-0 lead in the second half with her first varsity goal, assisted by freshman Corey LePoudre.

“We have four freshmen playing, so it’s nice to see a freshman scoring, assisted by a freshman,” St. Edward coach Tim Brieger said.

Mallory Malone scored the second goal for St. Edward on a penalty kick, and goalkeeper Paige Gannon made 4 saves in net for the Wave.

Maine West 1, Larkin 0: Keeper Dianna Hernandez made 11 saves for the Royals, but Larkin could not breach the goal line in this nonconference season opener. #147;It was a tightly contested game and that was that,#148; Larkin coach Ken Hall said.
