District 54 relocates board meeting on proposed cuts

Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 is relocating its board meeting Thursday to the gymnasium at Eisenhower Junior High School in Hoffman Estates to accommodate what could be a large crowd expected to show up to hear a proposal eliminating more than 100 positions.

District officials are expected to outline the plan when the board meets at 7 p.m. at the junior high, 800 W. Hassell Road. According to the proposal, the district would cut dozens of special education, early childhood, administrative and teaching positions — including 19 nontenured art, music and physical education teachers.

Officials say the proposal is precipitated by scheduling and enrollment issues, not financial concerns. Students, they say, will continue to receive the same amount of instruction in art, music and PE, and the average classroom size districtwide will remain 23 students.

The school board is expected to vote on the plan March 17.
