Kids learn skills of 1880s life

The Schaumburg Park District is inviting kids to spend Feb. 5 in the 1880s.

Two programs for kids ages 7 to 12 will teach skills possessed by children in the early 1880s. The events take place at the Spring Valley Nature Center’s Merkle Cabin, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road.

“Candle making in the cabin” will teach participants about candle making and how to make their own to take home. The class will be held from 3:45 to 5:45 p.m. and costs $8 for park district residents and $12 for nonresidents.

“Cooking in the Cabin” will teach kids how to prepare traditional foods over the cabin’s open hearth fireplace. This class costs $10 for residents and $15 for nonresidents.

Preregistration for both classes is required by Feb. 3. For more information, call (847) 985-2100.
