St. Viator treats home crowd to victory

“Chicago Sky Night” brought out a bigger-than-usual crowd at St. Viator’s Cahill Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

And the Lions girls basketball team treated those fans to a 53-43 nonconference victory over Regina.

Senior guard Megan Bailey led the hosts by equaling her career high of 15 points while junior guard Katie Gavin tossed in 13 with 4 rebounds.

“Megan shot the ball well,” said Lions coach Paul Bjerkness, whose team improved to 12-13.

Senior guard Taylor Skala chipped in 8 points for Viator.

“What was nice is that we did a good job on the glass with Lauren Rooney, Morgan Hess and Maggie Dougherty giving a nice collective effort,” Bjerkness said.

Bjerkness liked his team’s defensive effort.

“We had some nice energy on defense and that allowed us to get into our offense,” he said. “And we made 10-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter which was huge.”
