Aurora Christian rolls over St. Edward
There was no slow start Saturday night for the Aurora Christian boys basketball team.
The Eagles failed to show in the first 5 minutes, 40 seconds Wednesday in a loss to Marian Central.
Against St. Edward on Saturday, Aurora Christian hit four of five 3-pointers and scored 18 points in the first 4 ½ minutes and cruised to a 77-33 victory over the Green Wave in Elgin.
"Complete opposite of the other night when we couldn't make anything," Eagles coach Steve Hanson said. "Tonight they just went in and it makes you look pretty good."
Aurora Christian's Ryan Scuttle opened the scoring with a 3-pointer less than a minute into the game. Grayson Roberts added a 3-pointer and Dean Danos hit back-to-back 3-pointers from the top of the key as the Eagles took an 18-5 lead with 3:30 left in the first quarter. Aurora Christian (9-10, 4-2) was 4-of-5 from 3-point range and 6-of-8 from the floor.
"We came out with great energy. We knocked down shots," said Danos, who finished with a game-high 23 points. "Today was probably our best start of the year. It showed we're a good team and we're progressing."
The Eagles led 24-7 after the first quarter. The Green Wave (4-14, 1-5) went 2 for 8 from the floor and turned the ball over eight times in the first.
"The shot the ball very well," St. Edward coach P.J. White said. "As well as they shot the ball, we didn't. But you have to tip your hat to them."
The shooting woes continued in the second quarter for St. Edward.
The Green Wave went 1 for 12 and trailed 40-16 at the break and 63-22 after the third quarter.
Edward O'Halloran led the Green Wave, which shot 19 percent for the game, with 18 points. No other St. Edward player had more than 5 points.
Trenton Pouncy added 12 points and 7 rebounds off the bench for the Eagles. Nick Marema finished with 11 points.
