Viator's Majkowski heads to ESCC Hall of Fame

St. Viator boys basketball coach Joe Majkowski has been called to join the East Suburban Catholic Conference Hall of Fame.

Majkowski, who is in his 24th season as Viator's head coach, will become the school's ninth member of the ESCC Hall of Fame. An induction ceremony is scheduled for March 10.

“This is a distinct honor for Joe,” said the Rev. Robert M. Egan, C.S.V., St. Viator High School president in a news release. “It recognizes not only his contributions to the conference but his overall success as a coach, mentor, teacher, and counselor.”

Majkowski has a career record of 362-271 as Viator's head coach. Last year's 24-7 team set a school record for victories and won the program's first sectional title en route to a berth in the Class 3A supersectionals.

He was selected as the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association District 4 co-coach of the year. Majkowski was also the ESCC coach of the year in 1997 when Viator won a share of its only varsity boys basketball conference title.

Majkowski led Viator to a regional title in 2001. He has been an assistant football coach at the school.

“Joe has worked extremely hard to build not only a basketball program, but young men of great character and values,” said Viator athletic director Tim Carlson. “We are extremely proud to have Joe represent Saint Viator High School in the ESCC Hall of Fame as he embodies the true spirit and mission of the school.”

Viator's other ESCC Hall of Fame inductees are athletic directors Bob Artman and Lynn Gaziano, coaches Jim Lyne (football), Bill Pirman (baseball) and Mike Taylor (soccer) and football players John Gillen, Scott Zettek and John Josten.
